Shooting at Howe Park Wounds Four People Injured in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade

Sacramento authorities are working a shooting incident that took place Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park just as law enforcement were breaking up an unauthorized event of an estimated several hundred individuals.

Background

Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about Howe Park just after half past six in the evening after receiving reports of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Soon after, additional information came in describing an alleged brawl taking place within the park grounds.

Aerial units flew over the park but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Despite this, it was apparent that an enormous crowd had come together at the location without permission.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies moved to clear the area by encircling the gathering and announcing over their public address systems commanding attendees to go home. About 15 minutes were spent for the gathering to break up.

It was during this dispersal that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition were discharged. Gunfire triggered a stampede. Officers at once began locating gunshot victims.

Those Who Were Hit

In total, four victims were discovered with shooting injuries. All four — consisting of one woman and three men each reported to be in their twenties — were taken to local Sacramento hospitals. Thankfully, all four were expected to survive.

The Investigation

The primary shooting scene was determined to have occurred near the Cottage Way corridor alongside the Home Depot at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. CSI personnel recovered additional shell casings on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were noted in the iron perimeter fence bordering the Home Depot. These findings suggested that a second shooter had been aiming south from along Cottage Way aimed at the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was put under lockdown as a precaution. Crime scene technicians and detectives continued working well into the night.

Suspect Information

Information relayed through law enforcement radio communications confirmed that a Kia connected to the shooting was contacted by law enforcement in the Solano County area. Four detainees were held for questioning. Sheriff's units were dispatched to Solano County to collect the individuals for further questioning. Surveillance footage made clear that two shooters had been involved.
